William "Jean" Norton, 89, a 25 year resident of Wenatchee, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, June 12, 2003 surrounded by family, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's.

He was born Feb, 18, 1914 in Panguitch, Utah to William Taylor and Elsie Dean Smith Norton.

He was raised in Panguitch working summers as a teenager at Bryce Canyon and later joined the Civilian Conservation Corp. which was stationed in Escalante, Utah. It was there he met and married Cleone (Tony) David on September 22, 1934. He was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.

He was a loving father to his five children: Dale, Garry, Elayne, Keith and Marlene. The family moved to the greater Salt Lake area in 1941 spending over 30 years in the home built by Jean and his family in Murray, Utah. He was a long time employee of Kennecott Copper retiring in 1976.

He was an avid bowler, fisherman, hunter and traveler. He and his wife spent 12 years traveling throughout Mexico with family, as well as spending many summers fishing in the waters of Washington and Alaska. They traveled with their daughter Elayne and her husband Bill throughout many of the southern states; there were few roads not traveled.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, of the family home; two sons Dale (Sharon) Norton of Sandy, Utah; Keith Norton of Layton, Utah; two daughters Elayne (Bill) Chennault, and Marlene (Jack) Smith both of Wenatchee, WA; daughter-in-law Diane (Gerry) Massett. He was a very special "Poppa Jean" to 19 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren, two brothers Reed (Audrey) Norton and Jack (Sylvia) Norton; sister, Beth Partner; three sisters-in-law, Naomi Ott, Bertha Robinson and Valene Norton. He was preceded in death by his son, Garry; daughter-in-law, Donna; one granddaughter, his mother and father, three sisters, Cecil, Edith and Lola; two brothers, Kenneth and Donald.

Visitations will be held at Jenkins-Soffe Funeral Home; 4760 South State Street on Thursday evening June 19th from 6-8 and again on Friday June 20th at 11 a.m. with Funeral Services following at noon. Graveside services will follow at the Murray City Cemetery.
