Wife of Daniel Newell, aged 76 years, 12 days

*Eleanor Newell was living at 105 Scott Street, in the Third Ward of the city of Monroe, Mi. at the time of her death. She was the daughter of Harvey Norton and Eleanor Frances "Fannie" Austin Norton. Both of her parents were born in New York. At the age of 17 years, Eleanor married Daniel P. Newell. He preceded her in death in 1895. Together they had 5 children, of which 3 were still living at the time of her death. The informant on Eleanor's death record was C.D. (Charles Daniel) Newell of South Bend, Indiana. Burial was on July 13, 1903, under the direction of F.H. Humphrey, undertaker. (Lo Marie)

Eleanor was laid to rest at Woodland Cemetery, next to her husband Daniel.

** First appearance of the Newell's in recorded records as residents were in 1850 in the Third Ward of the city of Monroe, Michigan. Daniel Newell was 35 years, born in New York, and was a shoemaker in Monroe. His personal value was around a $1000, which was a well-to-do business person, at this time in the new growing city of Monroe. His wife was Eleanor, age 24 years, born in New York, and his son, Charles, who was 1 year old, born in Michigan. Living with them was George Lindley, age 25, born in New York, a clerk, but not known if he worked in the shoe shop.

***Eleanor appears again 1860, in the Third Ward of the city of Monroe, age 36, with her name spelled as Aleanor. She is living with her husband Daniel P., 45 years old and still a shoemaker. Living with them are their children all born in Michigan. They are Charles 11, Kate age 7, Frank 4, and Nora, who was 2 years old. All children born in Michigan.

****In 1880, as there are no records for 1870 for Monroe, Mi. the households of the Newell family changed. Eleanor's son Charles D. is living in the same Third Ward as before, but is now married to Luthera Clark Newell. (They were married on Nov. 14, 1872, in Monroe, Mi. by Minister J.C. Wortley. Charles was 23 years old and working as an Expressman, and Luthera, was 21 years old, and born in Jonesville, Mi. Their witnesses for the ceremony were Joseph Clark and Lucy Clay Clark, both residents of Monroe.) Joseph was an Expressman and may have worked with Charles. Lucy was the daughter of Reuben Clay (Klae) and Elizabeth Seip Clay, but no other family connections found for them, other than Joseph and Lucy are buried in Jonesville, Mi.

Charles is now 30 years old, Luthera 28, and their child, daughter Lois, is 4 years old, born in Michigan. The City Wards of Monroe have not changed at this time, however, Eleanor is living in the Fourth Ward of the city of Monroe, age 56, listed under Ellen J. Newell, still married, but seems to be keeping a boarding home, as 9 other residents of different names are living in her home. Her husband Daniel is also living in the Fourth Ward, age 64 years, still listed as married, a shoemaker, and living with his 2 children, Nora 21, and son Franklin, age 23 years. Separate dwellings.
