The death of Hon. John LEWIS, father of Hon. Dr. LEWIS, ex.-M.P.P., took place at Hillsboro (Albert Co.) Saturday morn. in his 87th year. The parents and grandparents of the deceased came to this province with the Loyalists at the close of the American Revolution. Deceased was born in Moncton in 1804, married in 1829 Miss Lavinia TAYLOR who died in 1863. His second wife was Mary BENNETT widow of William BENNETT and she survives him. He was for many years a member of the N.B. Legislature, having sat continuous from 1852 down to Confederation when he was called to the upper house. By his first wife, he leaves three children, Dr. Lewis, ex- M.P.P., Hillsboro; John LEWIS of the same place and Mrs. Rebecca PECK, Hopewell (Albert Co.) Rev. PRINCE of Moncton is a nephew.

Hon. John LEWIS was descended from a family which emigrated from Wales to New York about 1730. His father, Ichabod LEWIS and his grandfather, Alanson LEWIS were U.E. Loyalists and were born on Staten Island, New York, the family coming to the Province at the close of the revolutionary war. Mr. Lewis was born at Moncton, N.B. on Aug. 27, 1804 and was therefore in his 84th year at the time of his death. The maiden name of his mother was Rebecca READ, a native of New Brunswick. Her father removed to this Province from the Massachusetts colony before the war broke out with the mother country. He was educated at Halifax and began life as a clerk, commencing business on his own behalf at Surrey (Albert Co.) in 1831, which of late years he conducted in partnership with his grandson, John L. PECK. Mr. Lewis was created a J.P. in 1846. He was also a judge of the inferior court of common pleas until 1867, when that office was superceded by that of county judge. He was elected to the House of Assembly in 1852 to represent Albert Co. and sat almost constantly until 1867 when he was appointed to the Legislative Council. Mr. Lewis was defeated twice and elected six times in 15 years. An old time liberal he supported the administration of Sir John A. MacDonald. He was president of the Albert Railway Co. for four or five years and was subsequently a director of that road until June 1881 when he resigned the position. He was a member of the Hillsboro Baptist Church. Mr. Lewis was first married in 1829 to Lavenia TAYLOR of Hillsboro who died in 1863 leaving three children: Dr. W.J. LEWIS and John R. LEWIS of Hillsboro and Mrs. Elisha PECK of Hopewell Hill. Mr. Lewis was again married in 1864 to Mrs. Mary BENNETT (nee Mary DICKSON), widow of Capt. Wm BENNETT, but there is no issue by this marriage. His son, Dr. Lewis, has several times been a member of the provincial assembly.
