Charlie grew up in Girard,Ohio-He graduated from Girard High School in 1948 where he excelled in football,basketball and track.While in high school he played baseball with various teams. The summer after graduation he traveled with a Chicago Cubs farm team. When he got tired of constant travel and sleeping on the bus he returned to Girard. He joined the Army in September 1948 and after basic training was sent to Japan.Shortly thereafter he was detached from his company and chosen to play with the 7th Cavalry Regimental sports teams.He played sports until the Korean War began. His unit was one of the first in Korea. He was wounded twice-a minor wound on Sept.12,1950 and was badly wounded on Feb.4,1951. That kept him in a hospital in Japan for five weeks and three weeks of recuperation.He then returned to Korea where he continued to fight until his return to US in July,1951.
He then was stationed at Ft.Bragg,N.C.On Oct. 17,1951 on a blind date he met his future wife-Willa Deane McDuffie. They were married on Jan.19,1952 in Bennettsville,S.C.After his discharge on May 14,1952 they returned to Girard to live. He worked full time on the railroad and attended college full time.He graduated from Youngstown College{now YSU}in May,1956 with a BS in Education. While in college he was a member of Nu Sigma Rho{Sigma Tau Gamma}. He taught at Champion HS in Champion,Ohio 1956-1959 before moving back to the Girard Schools where he taught until he retired in 1984.After retirement he moved to Mesa,Az.where he taught at Williams Air Force Base until the base closure in 1993. He loved to learn and continued his schooling until he retired including Baldwin-Wallace in Ohio and Univ. of Arizona. He served as President of Girard Credit Union,President of Girard Education Assn. and President of his sons school PTA.While at Girard he coached Football for 20 years-the last 9 as Head Coach. He coached the golf team for many years and at various times coached basketball and track.He was elected to the Girard Sports Hall Of Fame in 2007. He was an avid golfer. He loved Ohio State football, Cleveland Browns football,Cleveland Indians baseball and YSU football. He was preceded in death by his parents,his sons Curtis on Feb.19,2005,Charles Jr.{Cliff} on May 11,2013 and an infant son Phillip on Aug.2.1961.He is survived by his wife of 61 years,Deane-two sons Eric{Sharon} of Niles,OH and Scott of Mesa,AZ.two daughter-in-laws.Debra of Chandler,AZ. amd Marybeth of Struthers,OH. six grandsons.Josh{Sarah}of Morrissville,NC,Brett of Tampa,FL,Stephen of Cary,NC,Kevin of Struthers,OH,Stuart and Daniel of Chandler,AZ and two step granddaughters Sarah Zetts of Columbus,OH and Julie Zetts of Struthers,OH. His passing leaves a void in our lives that can never be filled and he is missed so much.RIP Charlie-I will always love you.
