Charles E. Norton, beloved husband, father and friend, journeyed from this earth into his Savior's arms on March 31, 2005, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

Charles was a gift to this earth on March 6, 1934. His love for family and friends guided his ways and meant more to him than anything else. He is survived by his children, Terre Johnson and husband, Mike, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Kerre Cassidy and husband, Doug, of Collierville, Tenn., Charles Edward Norton II and wife, Lori, of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Julie Smothers and husband, Jason, of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; mother Lola Belle Norton of Saulte Saint Marie, Mich.; sister, Georgia Ray VanMeter and husband, Ellis, of Wabash, Ind., brother, Ernest Norton of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; sister Rinthy Cluff of Saulte Saint Marie, Mich., and sister, Sharon Kennedy of Saulte Saint Marie, Mich.

Charles was blessed with the following grandchildren: Aaron Johnson and wife, Katherine, Becky Johnson, Cindy Johnson, Katy Johnson, Alex Johnson, Camryn Cassidy, Amelia Cassidy, Owen Cassidy, Charles E. (Trae) Norton III, Tyler Norton, J. Darby Smothers, Jackson Smothers, John Henry Smothers, Julia Smothers, and great-grandchildren: Ian Johnson, Quinn Johnson and Courtney Johnson.
Charles is predeceased by his wife, Julia Yvonne Norton, and son, Mark Lindell Norton, his father, Bluford Shannon Norton and brother, Gregory Norton. Charles married Yvonne Huffman on Dec. 27, 1952 in Pocahontas, Ark. He began his professional career with the Missouri State Highway Department. He earned his Professional Engineer License in 1971 and later became licensed in seven states. In 1983, Charles and Yvonne formed Charles E. Norton Company, a general contracting firm. He was a member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, the First Baptist Church of Poplar Bluff, Westwood Hills Country Club and Poplar Bluff Elks Lodge. He enjoyed playing in the floor with his grandchildren, rocking the brandbabies and giving fatherly advice.

The family requests that memorials be made to the United Rescue Mission of Poplar Bluff, Mo.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Poplar Bluff. The funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church with Dr. William Vail officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Cotrell Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.
