Albert Eugene Montgomery Sr. died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, at Westwood Health & Rehabilitation Center, after an extended illness.

Albert was born Sept. 23, 1928, the son of Florence and Tom Montgomery. He grew up in Charleston, S.C., where he attended school, graduating from Burke High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and fought in the Korean War. In 1951, he married Andrena Gray. Upon leaving military service, he began a career as a special police officer with the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., where he retired after 33 years. Upon retirement, he moved to Greensboro.

He will be missed by a host of friends and relatives which include his devoted wife, Andrena Montgomery of the home; three loving children, Maxine Bennerman of Greensboro, Albert E. Montgomery Jr. of Fort Washington, Md., Anthony V. Montgomery of Greensboro; son-in-law, Sterlin Bennerman; daughter-in-law, Vanessa Montgomery; granddaughters, Teisha and Sheena Bennerman of Greensboro, Amanda Montgomery of Lake Wales, Fla.; sisters, Betty Mickle of Atlanta, Ga., Lillian Whack and husband, Harold of Charleston, S.C.; brother, Arthur Montgomery and wife, Reba of Dothan, Ala.; brother and sisters-in-law, Robert Gray, Vernon Gray of Charleston, S.C., Ervin Gray and wife, Willette of Secaucus, N.J., Andrew Gray and wife, Elaine of Clinton, Md., Marthalee Coaxum and husband, Freddie of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
