Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Prior to the Civil War, he served as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, State Senate and as a Captian in the Virginia Volunteers. In August 1862, he was commissioned Colonel of the 4th Virginia Cavalry and participated in the battles of Second Manassas, Boonsboro and was wounded at Sharpsburg. Recovering from this wound, he take part in the battle of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. In 1863, he was with the Army of Northern Virginia at the Battle of Gettysburg and was promoted Brigadier General in September 1863. In 1864, he skillfully led his corps in engagements at Fishers Hill and Waynesboro, until resigning his commission when elected to the Second Confederate Congress in October 1864. After the war, he served as president of the Virginia Central Railroad Company, Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad Company and again became a member of the Virginia State Senate.
