Carolyn Tripp Clement died on December 29, 1943 at the age of 82. She was the wife of Stephen Merrill Clement, president of the Marine National Bank, and she was one of Buffalo’s most distinguished women leaders. Born Carolyn Jewett Tripp in Buffalo, her father, Augustus F. Tripp was the original partner of Sidney Shepard in the firm of Sidney Shepard & Co.

Interestingly, she is credited with participating in an important event in Buffalo’s history—the first local telephone conversation. She spoke from Sidney Shepard & Co’s store on Main St. to Mr. Shepard who was at the company’s Clinton St. plant.

Ms. Tripp graduated from the State Normal School (now know as Buffalo State College) and spent a year in Europe traveling and studying piano. An accomplished musician, she played the harp and organ as well as the piano.

In 1884, she married Mr. Clement, who was a prominent Buffalo area businessman. The couple had 6 children. Mr. Clement died on March 26, 1913, the day before their 29th wedding anniversary and before construction of their palatial home at 786 Delaware Ave was completed.

Mrs. Clement was a strong philanthropist. She donated land to her beloved Westminster Church for construction of the church’s parish house. In memory of her daughter, she opened a summer camp for underprivileged children in Angola in 1918, calling it the Marion Clement Tener Vacation House. Mrs. Clement also contributed a total of $80,000 to the University of Buffalo and served on the University Council from 1920 to 1941. Clement Hall is named after her. But her most notable contribution to the community was the gift of her home on Delaware Avenue to the American Red Cross in June 1941.

Mrs. Carolyn Tripp Clement is buried in section 4 in Forest Lawn.
