In 1867 he was married to Esther "Etta" Louise Towne. They were married in Nunda, New York, which is where Etta's family lived.
Etta and Obed were to have three daughters and two sons. The family lived in Jerseyville Township, Ancaster County, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada. Obediah was a farmer and ran the saw mill. They were strong Methodists.
In September of 1887 Etta died of typhoid. In November of 1887 Obed came down with typhoid. He died five weeks later. Their youngest child was only two at the time of their death. The older children stepped in to act as heads of the family.
