Visitation for Charles T. Coker from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Peavine Baptist Church, 1089 Peavine Road, Rock Spring, GA 30739. There will be no service, and interment will be private at the Peavine Baptist Church Cemetery, under the direction of Gallagher Funeral Home, Ball, Louisiana.

Mr. Coker entered eternal rest on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at Rapides Regional Medical Center, Alexandria, Louisiana.

Born in Kensington, Georgia, on April 28, 1939, Mr. Coker grew up and attended schools in north Georgia, but graduated in 1958 from the Manatee County High School in Bradenton, FL. Five days after graduation, he enlisted in the US Army, and served for nine years and attained the enlisted rank of Sergeant First Class (E-7), before deciding to end his military career and to pursue a college education. He served stateside assignments at Fort Jackson, SC; Fort Monmouth, NJ; Fort Benning, GA; Fort Benjamin Harrison, IN; Fort Huachuca, AZ; and his last duty station at Fort Polk, LA, where he was an instructor to recently graduated basic trainees, training them to become US Army clerks. His overseas assignments were in the Panama Canal Zone, Germany, and South Korea, where he was awarded the Army Commendation Medal for his duties for investigating Congressional inquiries on behalf of families of military personnel. Charles was always proud to be a veteran and to have served his country.

Following his military career, he attended and graduated from Manatee Junior College, Bradenton, Florida, with an Associate of Arts degree; he then attended the University of South Florida, Tampa, FL, where he graduated and was awarded both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts degree in Library Science. During his career in the library field, Charles held library positions in military libraries, public libraries, school libraries, and in university libraries. He held the position of Director of Library Services at four Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals: Alexandria, LA; Bonham, TX; Oklahoma City, OK, and Battle Creek, MI, before retiring in 2000. While at Battle Creek, he was elected to the Board of Governors of the Battle Creek Area Federal Credit Union. He also was an ad hoc professor for a time at Nova University, Miami, FL, where he taught library science and education courses.

In lieu of flowers, Charles requested that donations be made to The Della Fund, P.O. Box 616, Rock Spring, GA 30739. Charles’ pet Della suffers from an ongoing health problem which will require expensive medical attention throughout her lifetime.

For the last eight or more years, Charles held the position of part-time librarian at the Learning Center of Rapides Parish (LCRP), located at England Air Park in Alexandria, LA. It is an institution that offers college level courses and degrees from a number of colleges/universities, both from within the state or from other states.

Charles enjoyed reading, traveling, and listening to music. He was always a big fan of pop singers Doris Day and Neil Diamond. He also enjoyed dabbling in politics and keeping up with current events. He was elected and served two terms on the Louisiana Republican State Central Committee, and devoted time and money over the years at all levels to those candidates who shared his Conservative values.

He is preceded in death by his parents.
