Gwen Roper Halgren, 75, formerly of Idaho Falls, passed away March 1, 2010, in her sleep at her home in Apache Junction, Ariz.
Gwen was born Jan. 14, 1935, in Thatcher, Idaho. She was the youngest of four children born to Ray and Hulda Roper. In 1946, the family moved to Idaho Falls, and Gwen attended school here.
On Jan. 16, 1951, she married Jay Halgren in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They were the parents of three children, Jim, Judy and Jon. Jay joined the United States Army and they were able to travel all over Europe. Jon was born in Germany while they were living there. After Jay retired, they bought a home in Washington along the Nisqually River near Olympia, Wash. While they were living in Washington, Gwen worked at a tree farm planting tree seedlings that were sent all over the country. Later they moved to Apache Junction, Ariz., and made their home there.
Gwen was an excellent cook. She enjoyed doing crafts. She made many afghans for family and friends. Gwen was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 56 in Idaho Falls. She also belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Apache Junction, Ariz., where she held many offices.
Gwen was preceded in death by her husband, Jay; parents; siblings, Earlene and Don Roper; daughter, Judy Lyon; and son, Jim.
She is survived by her son, Jon (Karen) Halgren; brother, Jay (Gladys) Roper; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
A family memorial was held March 6 at her son's home in Phoenix, Ariz.
She was loved by all who knew her and will be missed by everyone.
