MOORESBORO BOY STABBED TO DEATH While in Service. Roscoe Simmons Stationed at Fort Bragg meets death in Fayetteville.
Roscoe Simmons, 23-year-old boy of Mooresboro R-2 this county, was fatally cut in Fayetteville last Thursday night. He was found in a serious condition on a street there and died while en route to the hospital from knife wounds in his neck and heart.
Young Simmons was a private in the field artillery stationed at Fort Bragg. He is the son of Mrs. G. E. Simmons, of Mooresboro, Route 2, and he is survived by his mother, two sisters, and three brothers.
The father of the youthful soldier was killed eight or nine years ago, it is said, when he was struck by a train at Cliffside.
A dispatch from Fayetteville had the following to say concerning the finding of the fatally injured boy:
"Police here are holding several persons in connection with the stabbing death of Roscoe Simmons, of Mooresboro, a private in battery C, field artillery, Fort Bragg, who was found on Franklin Street late last night.
"Simmons died on the way to the hospital from two knife wounds, one in the neck and over the heart. Two men seen with him earlier in the night are being detained, but Chief J. Ross Jones declined to give their names until the investigation is concluded.
"The soldier was found by police officers, near the Carolina Grocery company's building, after the pastor of a negro church at Franklin and Maxwell streets had phoned headquarters that a man in the vicinity was sick or injured.
Simmons was a son of Mrs. G. E. Simmons, rural route 2, Mooresboro."
Funeral at Mt. Pleasant
Funeral services for young Simmons were held at Mt. Pleasant church Sunday afternoon at three o'clock. Hundreds attended the services and the church was filled with scores outside, and cars packed the road for a considerable distance from the church."
