Private, Captain Townsend's Company, New York Militia. Two months service: Sept. 20, 1814 - Nov. 20, 1814.
Summit Beacon, October 31, 1861, 2:5:
"Died in Akron, Oct. 28th, after a lingering illness, Dr. Joseph Cole, aged 66
years, 1 month and 11 days.
Dr. Cole was born in Winfield, Herkermer Co., N.Y., Sept. 17th, 1795. In the
fall of 1814, then 19 years of age, he joined the army at Sackett's Harbor for
sixty days. He graduated at the Fairfield Medical College, under President
Willoughby, Feb. 16th, 1825, and emigrated to Ohio the next spring, locating at
Old Portage, then in Portage county, now in Summit, where he immediately
acquired an extensive practice. Dec. 25th, 1826, the Doctor was married to
Charlotte Dewey, daughter of Roswell Dewey, formerly of Westfield, Mass., and
sister of Wm. H. Dewey, for many years a resident of Akron, now living in
Chicago. In the spring of 1827, while the Ohio Canal was being built, the Doctor
removed his family to Akron, where he has enjoyed the confidence of the people
in an eminent degree, and had an extensive practice until within the last two
years, his declining health has compelled him to relinquish business almost
entirely.
Dr. Cole was deeply interested in the subject of education, and in all the
benevolent and truly reformatory measures of the day; an early and ardent friend
of the Temperance Cause, and ever ready to labor for its advancement; an earnest
and zealous friend of human rights, whose door and purse were always open to
shelter and aid the needy and the oppressed, while his liberality towards
benevolent enterprises and public improvements knew no bounds.
A warm friend, a genial companion, an affectionate husband, a faithful father
and a good citizen, his loss will be truly mourned by all who knew him."
