Lucille Rose Bartol Weidner, a lifelong resident of Port Washington, wife, mother and grandmother, died a week shy of her 98th birthday on Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2021.
For Lucille, who was born Oct. 8, 1923, and her husband Walter, who died in 1997, family was everything.
She is survived by her five children, Mary Michael (Ed), Chuck Weidner (Linda), Clare Rose Weidner, Ann Boulay (Jim) and John Walter Weidner (Caroline); dear friend Trish Lato; 10 grandchildren, William Michael (Jessika), Tom Michael (Ruth), Matt Michael, Katie Rohn (Matt), Emily Buchholz (Nick), Nick Weidner, Rachel Weidner, Christopher Weidner, John Boulay and Anna Rose Weidner; six great-grandchildren, Madeline, Josephine, Jack, Dylan, Evelyn Rose and Liam Walter; nieces; and nephews.
Lucille was preceded in death by her husband Walter Weidner; parents Rose and Henry Bartol; sisters Norma Bartol, Lorraine Krier (Wallace) and Kathryn Bartol; brother John (Peggy) Bartol; niece Sandy Blades; and nephews Tom Bartol, Scott Krier, Tom Krier and Wally Krier.
Lucille worked for Simplicity Manufacturing in Port Washington in accounting and as a secretary from 1941 to 1955. She also served as an accountant and trustee at St. Peter of Alcantara Catholic Church in Port from 1974 to 1990.
Because of her strong faith, Lucille volunteered for decades at the church's food pantry and in their religious education program, at St. Vincent de Paul and in many other roles.
Although she loved doing this work, nothing compared to raising the five children she and Walter had over seven years. No matter what stage her children were at, she never hesitated to brag that "I enjoyed my children so much. They all got along so nicely because they were so close in age."
Lucille was an avid reader and loved jigsaw and crossword puzzles, the theater and traveling. As her eyesight was failing, she used her iPad to connect with her children and had at least four books going with them at one time. Her iPad also came in handy for keeping up with her podcasts.
Although she never was able to attend college, she lit the educational flame in her entire family. She was so proud that every one of her children, their spouses and all her grandchildren graduated from college or are pursuing this goal, four of whom earned doctoral degrees.
Traveling the world was Lucille's opportunity to learn. Besides extensive travels throughout the United States, Lucille loved her visits to Paris and London and her travels throughout Germany, Luxembourg, Belgium, Switzerland and Great Britain.
Lucille stayed active gardening and playing tennis into her 70s. She also took piano lessons and swam virtually every morning at 5:30 a.m. to get her lane. Her persistence through rain, snow and freezing temperatures allowed her to log over 1,000 miles up into her early 90s.
Lucille's other passion was playing cards. She played bridge at a very high level with numerous clubs and players for over 75 years, with her favorite partner being her son-in-law Ed.
Lucille lived at Harbor Club in Port Washington for three-and-a-half years. We are thankful to all her caregivers for the kindness and love that they showed to her every day. We are also thankful for the care provided by Heartland Hospice over the past year.
Private family services were held at St. John XXIII Catholic Parish, St. Peter of Alcantara Church on Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2021.
Final interment was at St. Mary's Cemetery in Port Washington.
