Daniel Boone Stevenson Jr. died May 4, 2009, in Canal Winchester, Ohio. He was the son of Daniel Boone Stevenson and Virginia Jones Stevenson, and was born in South Fayette, West Virginia, on February 14, 1918. He was a telegrapher and train dispatcher for the C&O Railroad and retired after 40 years of employment.
He resided at 256 Maple Lane, Bradley, for 60 years before moving to Ohio in 2007 after suffering a stroke.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his first wife of 40 years, Mary R. Tennant, in 1987.
Survivors are his wife of eighteen years, Mary E. Stevenson, his son and daughter-in-law, Daniel L. and Sharon Stevenson of Lavalette, W.Va., and daughter, Judith Kay Bragg; J. Nick and Carol Legg of Canal Winchester, Ohio, Susan and Hobe Bauer, Statesville, N.C., Cheryl and Phillip Hudnall, Kingsport, Tenn.; two sisters, Joyce Ferrell of Charleston, Garnet Burke of Mumford, Tenn.; and grandchildren, Jessica Legg-Bagley, Nicholas Legg of Canal Winchester, Ohio, Emily Roebke, Winter Garden, Fla., and Elise North, Athens, Ga.
He was a member of the Beckley Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder, Sunday school teacher, and played in the Genesis hand bell choir for several years. Earlier he was a charter member and instrumental in the formation of the Bradley Presbyterian Church in Bradley, Sunday school Superintendent and teaching classes. He was a Certified Lay Pastor for the Presbytery of West Virginia, serving many churches in Southern West Virginia.
During World War II he served with the 759 Railway Operating battalion in the European Theater of Operations, in which he was responsible for all movement of trains, orders, and instructions for switching. He served in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany before being discharged in November 1945 as Staff Sgt., then serving three years in the reserves.
First in his life were his church affiliations followed by his Masonic groups. He was Past Master of MacDonald-Warren Lodge No. 103, Mt. Hope, Beckley Chapter #38 Royal Arch Mason, and Mt. Hope Commandery #22 of Knights Templar and served as Commander and was Grand Commander of WV 1989-1990. He was elected to the Red Cross of Constantine in 1990, and Knight of the York Cross of Honor in 1988. He was a member of the Order Eastern Star, Winolia #59, Mt. Hope, where he served as Worthy Patron several years. He was a charter member and very active in the Shepherd Center organization.
Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. today, Friday, May 8, at the Beckley Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jeffrey Myers and Rev. Janice M. Tiedeck officiating. Interment will be at the Blue Ridge Memorial Garden.
The family will receive friends at the church two hours prior the funeral service.
