Rounsevell Mortuary records of Lead state that J.A. Archibald died at the Park Hotel in Lead on September 25, 1929 from myocarditis; age – about 74 years; certifying physician – Dr. A.S. Jackson; occupation – retired preacher; divorced; born in Canada; parents born in Canada; funeral services at the Baptist Church at 2:30 p.m. on September 29, 1929; buried in the Municipal Cemetery in South Lead; burial permit attached to the original mortuary record.

Lead Daily Call newspaper, September 25, 1929 - "J.A. Archibald Found Dead At His Home Today.
J.A. Archibald, 74, a resident of Lead, Deadwood and the Northern Hills since the early 80's, was found dead in his bed at his home on Bleeker street this morning, shortly before noon. Apparently he had passed away quietly in his sleep. He was heard moving around in his room about 8 o'clock this morning, neighbors say, and last evening walked up town. He had been ailing for a long time.
Mr. Archibald was born in Canada. As a youth he came to the United States, living first in St. Louis, then in Nebraska, and later coming to the Black Hills where he lived in Hot Springs for a short time. He came to Deadwood in the early 80's and shortly after he came to Lead where he has made his home since. For a number of years he was the pastor of the Baptist church here. After he abandoned the ministry he was engaged in stone masonry and construction, and was employed for a number of years by the Homestake Mining company.
He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. R.G. Lewis, of Princeton, N.J., and Miss Alleyne Archibald, of New York City, and a son, Floyd.
Arrangements for the funeral services were not made today, pending word from Mr. Archibald's relatives."

Lead Daily Call, September 27, 1929 - "Archibald Funeral Rites To Be Sunday Afternoon.
Funeral services for the late J.A. Archibald, well-known old timer of Lead whose death came last Monday morning, are to be held at 2:30 o'clock on Sunday afternoon from the Baptist church, the church of which Mr. Archibald was pastor many years ago.
Burial will be made in the South Lead cemetery."

Lead Daily Call, September 30, 1929 - "Funeral Rites Yesterday for J.A. Archibald.
Funeral services for the late J.A. Archibald, a resident of Lead and the Northern Hills for many years and former pastor of the Lead First Baptist church, were held yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Baptist church. The Rev. Daniel J. Reub, of Clear Lake, S.D., visiting pastor, conducted the rites. Many old time friends of the deceased were present to pay last respects.
The pallbearers were J.W. Campbell, Alvah Campbell, Richard Harris, T.D. Murrin, C.G. Berg and E.R. Graham. Burial was made in South Lead cemetery.
Mrs. Archibald, of New York city, arrived in Lead yesterday morning. After attending to business matters today, Mrs. Archibald planned to leaves this evening to return to her home."
