In the 1850 census, Francis was living with his parents, Frederic Hammond Eveleth (59) and Elizabeth Whitney Eveleth (43) and siblings Martha A. (16), Fernando C. (12), Charles L. (10), and Mary (7). Elvira E. Cook (6), the daughter of Elizabeth's sister Nancy, was also living with them. Francis was 18. In 1855, their father died and their mother eventually remarried.

In 1860, Francis M. was 28. He was living in Presque Isle, Maine with his wife Ellen (24). Also in the home were Amy Wilcox (22), Daniel Prescott (21) and Zilpher Prescott (21) both listed as millmen in the census figures. His siblings Charles L., Martha A., and Mary W. were living in Phillips with his mother and her second husband Mr. Caldon. His brother, Fernando C. died in 1862 and was buried in Ft. Fairfield, Maine.

In "U.S. School Catalogs, 1765-1935" published in 1910, Dr. Eveleth was listed as a student of medicine in the class of 1855 at Bowdoin College. According to the same book, he also graduated in the Winter Session of 1856 from the Eclectic Medical College of Ohio. Ecclectic medicine emphasized herbal treatments and physiotherapy along with surgery and was a popular movement in that era.

In August 21, 1861, Francis enlisted as an assistant surgeon after passing his medical proficiency exams in Portland. He was commissioned as an officer into Co. F of the 7th Maine Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to full surgeon on February 13, 1863. He mustered out of the 7th on August 21, 1864. "U.S. Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles" states that he was then commissioned an officer in Company S of the Maine 1st Veteran Infantry Regiment on August 21, 1864. He mustered out of the 1st on June 28, 1865. According to Civil War Soldier records, Francis' brother, Charles Leroy Eveleth enlisted in the 8th Maine Infantry Regiment on September 7, 1861. He was promoted through the ranks to 2nd Lieutenant and mustered out on June 14, 1865.

In May of 1863, Francis was listed in the Post Return of Camp Abraham Lincoln at Portland, Maine. By late 1864 there is proof that he is back with the men of the 7th because he is signing reenlistment papers. He may have been in the Veteran unit at that time.

On December 29, 1891, Ellen A. Eveleth claimed her husband's pension.
