He was the grandson, and namesake, of Congressman Esbon Blackmar and Mrs. Arabella Reed Blackmar. This Esbon went by the nickname of "E.B."

E.B VanValkenburg became well known locally during the success of the "Four Oarsmen," of which Esbon held the "stroke" position. Esbon's rowing team won The National Amateur Rowing contest in Saratoga, New York.
