CLAY CENTER-- Howard Steele, 82, died Saturday, May 18, 2013 at Medicalodge, Clay Center.

Mr. Steele was born May 31, 1930 at Haddam, Kan., the son of Talmage and Florence (Pierce) Steele.

He attended country schools and Mankato High School. He married Lucille Blenn on June 18, 1950. He worked as a journey lineman for the City of Clay Center for 20 years. They moved to Burlington where he worked for the rural electric cooperative for 16 years until he retired and returned to Clay Center. His wife preceded him in death on July 9, 2010. He was a den leader for the Boy Scouts and coached girls softball. He was also preceded in death by one son, Kevin Steele and three brothers.

Survivors include two daughters, Sherrie Willmann and husband Gary of Clay Center and Beverly Layman and husband Jerry of Trenton, Ga.; one daughter-in-law, Deedra Steele of Emporia; one brother, Harold Steele and wife Shirley of Cheyenne, Wyo.; two sisters, Gladys Gallagher of Denver, Colo. and Ethel Clair of Randall; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 22, at Greenwood Cemetery, Clay Center, with the Rev. James Byers officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Respect calls may be made from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home.
