Alfred Patrick Collins, 83, of Harpers Ferry, WV passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2013 at his residence.

Born June 13, 1929 in Union, WV, he was the youngest of four sons and one daughter born to Addie Catherine and Charles William Collins.

During his school years in Monroe County, he played football and baseball four years each, sang in the High School Chorus, was an active member of the 4H program for eight years going to Jackson Mills each summer where he was awarded the 4H Honor Pin. His outdoor hobbies were hunting squirrels and rabbits and digging Ginsing. He also enjoyed collecting Civil War Artifacts, refinishing furniture, collecting coins and stamps and antiques. While visiting antique shops in Georgetown, he told his Seminary roommate that he was never interested in antiques until he met Catherine! She was the first one he collected! Al had his private pilot license and enjoyed flying.

He was a member of the Methodist Youth Fellowship and the Future Farmers of America.

After graduating from Greenville High School he attended Concord College for three years, then entered the US Army in 1951, during the Korean War. He went to Fort Meade, MD and on to Camp Breckenridge, Kentucky for basic training. He was than sent to Brook Army Hospital in San Antonio, Texas and on to Denver, CO and Seattle, WA for medical training. He sailed to Toyko, Japan and on to the 282nd General Hospital in Osoka, Japan for thirteen months of duty. On off duty days he enjoyed bicycling through rural areas around Osaka and visited with the native people.

On returning home he earned his BS Degree from Concord College, Athens, WV, took graduate courses from Virginia University and WV University and earned his MA Degree from Wesley Theological Seminary. He came to Bolivar, United Methodist Church as a student pastor, September 21, 1957 and married Catherine Butts September 20, 1958.

He was an ordained Methodist Minister in the West Virginia Conference and served the Bolivar Church four years. Afterwards he was the Lay Speaker, Chairman of the Administrative Board and Adult Sunday School Teacher for 30 years. He received his MA Degree in Education Guidance and Counseling from George Washington University and worked for 25 years in public school counseling with the Loudoun County, VA Board of Education. While working at Loudoun Valley High School he was the golf coach.

His interest and activities include serving as Scout Master and Explorer Advisor for ten years. He enjoyed taking a group of scouts to Camp Philmont Scout Reservation in New Mexico for ten days. He was the first manager of Camp Manidokan in 1958. He served on the Board of Directors of Jefferson Memorial Hospital, was President of the Loudoun County Retired Teachers Asso., Secretary of Virginia Lodge No. 1, IOOF, President of Harper Cemetery Board of Trustee and EMT for the Friendship Fire Co. and Ambulance service. He delivered a baby on the way to the hospital, what a joy! He had been a member of the Charles Town Lions Club for 33 years with perfect attendance, President 6 terms, Secretary 9 years, Zone chairman, Region chairman and District Governor.

Services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at the Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, 256 Halltown Road, Harpers Ferry, WV with Rev. Douglas Fraim and Rev. Charles Henry officiating. Interment will be in Harper Cemetery
