OBITUARY: WINFIELD SCOTT HARVEY
ARDEN - Winfield Scott Harvey, 89, passed away surrounded by his family May 14th 2013 at his home in Arden, NC.
Scott was born to Doctor John K & Olga Harvey in Salina, Kansas, September 10th 1923. He studied Business Administration at the University of Kansas where he was president of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. He served in WW II as an Infantry Sergeant in the US Army for three years. He received the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in the Battle of the Bulge.
Scott joined the General Electric Company in 1947. In 1949, "I came South, married a Southern girl, Margaret Carlberg of Asheville", and decided, "I'd like to stay in North Carolina."
Scott became involved in politics in the 60's and was a Republican candidate for the NC Senate in 1964 and for the US House of Representatives in 1966 and 1968. He also served as the Buncombe County Chairman for Governor James Holshouser's 1972 campaign. Scott was appointed NC Secretary of Commerce in 1974. He also served on the NC Utilities Commission.
Scott was active in the Episcopal Church throughout his life. He served as Senior Warden at All Souls and in many other capacities. Scott was a member of the Pen & Plate Club of Asheville.
Scott enjoyed tennis, gardening, and was a skilled furniture maker. He was fond of good conversation with his friends.
Scott is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaret; as well as his daughter, Stuart and her husband, Thom Fowler, of Winston-Salem; and a son, Robert and his fiancee, Jennifer Brown, of Arden. He is also survived by his wonderful grandchildren, Sally, Elise, Michael and William.
The family would like to thank the professionals at Four Seasons Hospice and all the caregivers who comforted Scott and his family in his final years and made living at home possible.
A memorial service will be held at the Cathedral of All Souls in Biltmore, NC at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 18th.
