Iba Johnson — known to many as "Ivy" — grew to adulthood at Troutdale, Oregon. On September 10, 1898, at Portland, Oregon, she became the wife of James Pelton, a Troutdale-area farmer and carpenter and a member of a pioneering family which had crossed the Great Plains to Oregon from New York in 1859. The Peltons lived for several years in the Columbia River Gorge mill town of Bridal Veil, Oregon, but after 1905 they made their home in the Arleta district of Portland. James and Iba were divorced in 1916. Iba later continued to reside in Portland with her second husband, Walter Chandler, a foreman with a local construction firm whom she married at Vancouver, Washington, on June 21, 1920. She died at 96.
