Mattie was the daughter of Kennerly(VA) and Esther Ann GROSECLOSE Dobyns(IN).

When Mattie was 5 years old, the youngest of 5 children, her mother died in 1872 at age 44. That same year her father married Mary Eliza Kelso, the housekeeper and nanny.

About 1875 they moved from IA to Clarksville, Red River Co., TX, and in 1888 Mary, Kennerly, and their infant son died the same day of yellow fever.

Many of Kennerly's 9 orphaned children left for the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, to work on the cattle ranch of Holmes Willis.

Mattie married John Marion Jaye in 1884, Gordonville, Grayson Co., TX. 8 children born of this union were: Ivy Jaye Cotner; Ada Marie "Marian" Jaye Samples; William "Bill" Jaye; Ida Bell Jaye Yoakum; Eva Velma Jaye Yoakum; Ora Jaye Ogburn; Vaughn Jennings Bryan Jaye; Guy Leroy "Little Guy" Jaye.
