Our beautiful and precious Mom passed away on Sunday, September 29, 1991, just a few days before her 86th birthday.

She was born on October 4, 1906, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the daughter of Aaron Alma and Rosa Lorene Rencher Nelson. Raised in Enterprise, Utah, attended school there. She was a 1925 graduate of Dixie College in St. George, Utah.

She married Edwin Sandberg and was later divorced. In 1937 she married Hyrum Clark Thomas and he preceded her in death. They are survived by the following children: Morgan M. Thomas (Joyce) Springville, Utah; Marilyn T. Cox (Sherman) Bellevue, Washington; H. Clark Thomas (Sylva) Cedar City, Utah; RoseMary T. LeBaron (Don) Highland, Utah; Lolly T. Seal (Jack) Holladay, Utah; Elbert Thomas, Los Angeles, California; Richie N. Thomas, DeFuniak Springs, Florida; Michelle Thomas, St. George, Utah; survived by grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her surviving brothers and sisters are: Zelda N. Miles (Wyatt W.) Midvale, Utah; Mary N. Campbell, St. George, Utah; Elbert L. Nelson (Myrlene) St. George; E. LeGrande Nelson (Alice) Twin Falls, Idaho; and Milton R. Nelson (Carol) Provo, Utah. She was preceded in death by her parents and the following brothers and sisters: LaRue N. Frei, Wesley A. Nelson, Edna N. Hansen, F. Clayton Nelson and V. Pershing Nelson.

Irma will be remembered for her contributions to the community. For many years she was a judge of drama competitions at Dixie College. She also entertained with readings, both dramatic and humorous. She enjoyed performing in singing groups. She was a past-president of Alice Louise Reynolds Club and enjoyed participation in Rotary and Lions Club.

She received significant recognition in the United States and in other countries for bringing attention to the problems caused by radioactive fallout from nuclear testing in Nevada. Of particular concern to her were the deaths of her many friends and neighbors. She was a master craftsman in the field of pottery. Her creativity is exhibited in private collections throughout the United States and also in Europe. Irma always believed that her children were her greatest works of art.

Funeral services will be Friday, October 4th, at the St. George Fifth Ward Chapel, 65 South 400 East, at 11 a.m. Friends may call at Spilsbury Desert Rose Mortuary on Thursday, 6-8 p.m., and at the Chapel on Friday one hour prior to services. Burial, St. George City Cemetery.
