Born in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Edison Ford and Obelia Bridges Byrd.
Joe was a graduate of Shelby High School and Cleveland Community College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served two tours in Vietnam. After working many years as a commercial truck driver, he retired from Averitt Express Trucking Company. Joe enjoyed traveling, especially going on cruises with family and friends.
Joe was a member of Polkville Baptist Church and attended Big Springs Baptist Church in Hollis.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Edison Ford (Buddy) Byrd Jr. and a sister-in-law, Judy Cook Byrd.
Survivors include his loving wife of 44 years, Betty Greene Byrd; one daughter, Erica Byrd Camp and husband Eugene Newman (Junior) Camp Jr., three grandchildren, Jordan, Cameron, and Mallory Camp all of Kings Mountain; a sister, Martha Byrd of Adelaide, Australia and Myrtle Beach, SC; two brothers, Gene Byrd of Conway, SC and Donald Byrd and wife Kathryn of Myrtle Beach, SC; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
