James enlisted in Co. B, 23rd Infantry, on 5 Oct 1861 in Tennessee. His rank at enlistment was Quartermaster Sergeant. When he surrendered on 9 Apr 1865 at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, his rank was Captain.

James married Hadassah "Dessa" Cowan in Bedford County, Tennessee on 29 Oct 1868. They had 8 children between 1870 and 1886, all surviving to adulthood. Births for several of the children are found in the First Presbyterian Church, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, session and register records. James, a merchant, was Mayor of Murfreesboro 1881-1882.

By 1910 his family, living at 446 East Main Street in Murfreesboro, consisted of his wife, 2 daughters, a son, daughter-in-law and 2 grandsons. His occupation was listed as "Own Income" and his house "free of mortgage." One of his daughters was a newspaper reporter, his son a proprietor of a shoe store.

James wrote and signed his Last Will andTestament on 16 Mar 1910, with a codicil dated 21 Nov 1910. His wife, Hadassah, was named executrix and received his entire estate during her life. Upon her death, the estate was to go to any of James' unmarried daughters for their support. The will was probated in Rutherford County, Tennessee on 20 Jan 1913. Hadassah lived until 1930.
