He last married Rosamund McKenzie in 1898 and fathered Anna Rebecca (b. 01/15/00) and Martin Luther (b. 11/11/01). By 1900, he was living in Bernardo Judicial Township, San Diego County, California, where he was a member of Escondido Post No. 143, G.A.R. He died at his home in Escondido.

He arrived in Escondido, California in 1890 and built what is now known as the "Culp house" in the historic district at 204 W. 8th Street. In Escondido he became the superintendent of streets, served as town Marshal from 1910 to 1916, and was also a tax collector.
