U.S. Congressman. Graduating from University of Georgia Law School, in 1921, he was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Lexington, Georgia. He was a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives, (1907-08), Mayor of Lexington, (1908-14) and Elbert County Attorney, (1928-33). In 1933, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-third Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Charles H. Brand, reelected to the Seventy-fourth Congress and to the next twelve succeeding Congresses, serving until 1961. Not seeking reelection, he lived in retirement until his death at age 81.
