San Francisco's Mike Finn was a professional as a California baseball player and manager, as well as owner of the Pioneer Baseball Team in San Francisco, California.
A versatile performer, he was an adept infielder, outfielder, and catcher, but was, in the Oakland Tribune's opinion, "a pitching star of magnitude." His managerial legacy was five championships during the California League's formative years (1886-1893). An established player, manager, and owner, Finn had an encyclopedic knowledge of West Coast baseball history and helped to popularize the game in San Francisco and San Jose where he was known as the Duke of Santa Clara. His contributions, along with those of a handful of others, eventually led to the establishment of the Pacific Coast League in 1903.
A native of Craughwell, County Galway, Ireland, Michael Edward Finn was born on September 29, 1856 and died February 10, 1935 in San Francisco, California. U.S.A.
