Sally Rae Walker passed away on May 14th at home in Nyssa, Oregon after a long courageous fight with breast cancer. Her battle against this disease lasted almost four years. Through all of the treatments and resulting side effects she never complained or gave into the pain and suffering. She held her head high and faced every day with courage, hope that she would get well, and a positive attitude that continued to amaze family, friends, and those who treated her.

Sally was born on May 10, 1947, in Nyssa, Oregon to Gilbert Holmes and Ailene Hendricks Holmes. She was the third of four daughters and spent her childhood and life in Nyssa until her marriage in 1966. She attended Nyssa schools and graduated from Nyssa High School in 1965. She enjoyed school and participated in many school programs and events.
After graduation Sally attended beauty school in Pendleton, Oregon.

In 1966 Sally married Glenn Walker, and that marriage lasted nearly 47 years until the time of her death. Three children were born to the couple: Jeff in 1968, Nikki in 1971, and Casey in 1972.

During the early years of their marriage Sally was a stay at home mom. Her main goal at that time was to raise the children and be there for them at all times. As a result her children grew up knowing that mom was always there and that they could always depend on her. As the years went by and the children grew that bond became stronger and is still as strong today as it was while they were growing up.

When the children were in junior high and high school Sally decided to enter the work force. In Lakeview while her husband was principal of the high school she worked as a dental assistant to Dr. Pat Sabin. Sally had no formal training, but Dr. Sabin worked with her and she spent many hours studying and learning about teeth and her role as his assistant. She turned out to be a valuable asset to Dr. Sabin as her pleasant demeanor helped patients to be able to relax and feel less fear while sitting in the dental chair.

When Glenn became principal of Nyssa High School and the family returned to Nyssa, Sally was hired by the school district to work in the special education department under Roger Williams. This was the start of a career in the Nyssa School District that was to continue until breast cancer forced her to retire in 2010.

After working in the special education department a position opened as secretary in the elementary school and Sally was hired. She loved every aspect of her job regardless of what it took to perform the duties. As a result she became a huge success as the teachers, students, administrators, and parents realized that Sally was there to serve them. She especially worried over students who were having a rough go at life and she did everything in her power to help. Her goal was to be nice to everyone and provide whatever service she could to help.

People really mattered to Sally and she was always looking for ways she could be of service to others. She was pretty much oblivious to differences in race, religion, or anything that seems to drive people apart. Sally only saw people and she did what she could to provide service to anyone. As a result the Nyssa Chamber of Commerce named her Citizen of the Year in 2010. It was an award that she truly cherished, but never thought she was deserving of it. She mentioned many times that there were others more deserving, but the truth of the matter is that she really was deserving of it.

Sally was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had a strong testimony of The Gospel. She served in many positions such as Relief Society President, Primary President, Young Women's President, and she worked as a teacher in the Primary, Sunday School, and Young Women's. She was a faithful visiting teacher and would accept any calling.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother-in-law, Don, and nieces, Lorrie, Carli and Kayla.

She is survived by her husband, Glenn, of Nyssa; her children, Jeff, of Nyssa, Nikki, of Salt Lake City, Casey (Krissy), of Adrian and their children Olivia, Chase, Laynee and Jesse. She is also survived by her sisters and husbands, Sondra Walker (David), of Prosser, Washington, Susan Munn (Duane), of Prosser, Washington, Jolene Wilson (Don), of Weiser, Idaho. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
