SGM Richard A. Chancey, 67, died at 7:39 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

He was born Oct. 2, 1941, in Murphysboro, the son of John and Juanita Chancey.

Richard married Reon Fulmer of Carbondale in First Christian Church of Murphysboro on June 28, 1968. She survives.

He was a graduate of Murphysboro Township High School with the Class of 1959 and studied two years at SIU.

SGM Chancey served in the U.S. Army for a period of 26 years and 7 months, retiring August of 1987. Among the many awards he received were Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, eight Good Conduct Medals and numerous campaign and occupation ribbons. He served two tours in Germany, one year in Korea, one tour in Viet Nam and at numerous stateside east coast posts. His last assignment prior to retirement was with the ROTC Detachment at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.

Upon retirement from the military he worked at the Carbondale Clinic in the purchasing department.

Richard was a member of the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, in Carbondale.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; son, Eric Allen; brother, Robert; and sister, Elizabeth.

Services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009, in First Christian Church on Monroe in Carbondale, with the Rev. Katherine Graves officiating. SGM Chancey will be cremated. Military graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, 2009, in Tower Grove Cemetery in Murphysboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Paralyzed Veteran's Association.
