Born Gladys Annie Morris Chatfield, daughter of Arthur Allen (b. 1881, d. 1918) and his wife Jeanette Louise "Jessie" (née Morris, married in 1904), she came to Canada when her mother's second husband, her step-father Hugh Taylor Reid, returned to Canada in 1920 with his new family after serving in WW1.
