He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied both Medicine & Law, and received a degree in both in 1862. He joined the United State Army, as and Acting Assistant Surgeon in 1862. He was an Assistant Surgeon from 1862 to 1865 when he was discharged from military service in the United States Army. After the Civil war he settled in Brooklyn, New York, where he became a prominent physician & civic member. He went on to serve on the Board of Medical Examiners. He was appointed Commissioner of Lunacy (overseeing mental hospitals) from 1879-1883. Appointed to Commissioner of Water, Director of the Public Library, New York City, New York. He served as the Secretary of the State Medical Society & was appointed Medical Director of the Northern Pacific Railroad (1887-1890). He was also a professor of Medical Jurisprudence at the University in Minnesota, and Minnesota Historical Society.
