a GOP committeeman for the Town of Ira, died
unexpectedly Saturday, August 26 at Auburn Memorial
Hospital. He was admitted to the hospital on Thursday.
Born in the Town of Ira, he was a graduate of Hannibal
High School and Oswego Normal School and taught industrial
arts in Medina from 1929 to 1941. After retiring from the
school system he joined his father, the late Walter Matson,
in the operation of a farm. He retired in 1967.
He was active in community affairs and held the GOP
committee post for many years. He was trustee and
treasurer of Ira Union Cemetery.
His death follows that of his only brother, William
by nine months.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs . Grace Hulett Matson;
three nephews, Lt. Col William Matson with the
Strategic Air Command in Omaha, Neb., Robert
Matson of Kennedy and John Matson of Pontiac, Mich.,
an aunt, Mrs. Mabel Hulett of Ira; and two cousins,
Mrs. Edith Cooper of Fulton and Mrs. Virginia
Reynolds of Victory.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the
Jewell Funeral Home, Cato, with the Rev. Charles N.
Ouderkirk, pastor of the South Hannibal Federated Church,
officiating.
Burial was in Ira Union Cemetery.
