Simon was the son of Absolim Joy and Jane Faires, both of Belmont County, Ohio. He served as a union soldier four years. His wife, Malinda, preceded him in death. He was a retired farmer.

Military service (for the union):

On 26 Apr 1861, at the age of 23, Simon enlisted in Company H, Ohio 17th Infantry Regiment. Rank at enlistment: Private. Mustered out on 15 Aug 1861 at Camp Goddard, Zanesville, OH.

On 3 Oct 1861, at the age of 24, Simon enlisted in Company I, Ohio 62nd Infantry Regiment. Rank at enlistment: Private. Mustered out on 15 Dec 1861. Transferred to on 15 Dec 1861.

On 1 Dec 1861, at the age of 24, Simon enlisted in Company I, Ohio 78th Infantry Regiment on 15 Jan 1862. Rank at enlistment: 1st Sergeant. Promoted to Full 2nd Lieutenant on 10 Feb 1865. Mustered out on 11 Jul 1865 at Louisville, KY. See also 78Ohio.org.
