*Died - Tuesday morning, Nov. 26th, Nathan Duncanson, one of Monroe's oldest residents died suddenly of heart failure at his residence in the First Ward. Mr. Duncanson was born in Senecca County, N.Y. Feb 17th, 1817, and came to this city about 52 years ago. He was a painter by trade and followed it until ill health compelled him to give it up. Since then he pursued the occupation of farming. He leaves a widow and two children. His remains were buried from the residence Sunday, Rev. L.B. Bissell, officiated. (The Monroe Democrat, December 3, 1891, page 1, col. 4)

**Nathan's death record says he was a 74 year old black male, married and a resident of Monroe, Mi. He was born in New York; with his current residence as Monroe, and was a farmer. He died from kidney trouble at Monroe, Mi; his mother and father. both unknown.

Nathaniel lived in the First Ward of the city of Monroe, Monroe County, Michigan in 1860, 1870, and 1880. His name was given as Nathan in the 1870 census. He was a brother of Fanny Duncanson. In the 1860 First Ward census, his name was Nathaniel Dunkinson. At that time he was thirty-five years old, born in New York and was a farmer in Monroe, Michigan. All the family was listed as mulatto. The family continued to live in the west side of the First Ward in 1870 and 1880 on Harrison Street. Nathan married after the death of his first wife Mary, because his obituary states, he leaves "a wife and two children."

Rest in Peace

Nathaniel "Nathan" Duncanson was a son of John Dean Duncanson (d. 1851), buried in this same cemetery. His mother was Lucy Nickles (also spelled "Nichols"). For more about the parents, see the Wikipedia page for Robert S. (Seldon) Duncanson, Nathaniel's brother: The record can be found on Wikipedia as no links to outside websites are allowed.

There is a Public family tree in Ancestry.com named "Graham Duncanson". Name in honor of Rebecca (Graham) Duncanson, 1st wife of Robert Seldon Duncanson. That tree claims that Nathaniel was a brother of Robert, and married twice to women in Canada of German Birth, with wife Mary being the mother of a son named John. The names of the wives are given as "Phebe Grob", and "Mary Gubb". I suspect they are the Same Person. It appears Nathaniel married "Phebe Grob" in 1862 in Sandwich, Ontario". I have been unable to find Nathaniel in the 1850 or 1860 US Federal Census. Nathaniel finally makes an appearance in the 1880 US Federal Census, as living with his sister Fanny Duncanson:
