The Sage, Nampa High School yearbook

After successfully directing Nampa High School athletics for nine years, J.A. "Babe" Brown stepped up into the College field last spring. And that was cause enough for the many long faces among Nampa's graduating athletes. They will not soon forget the Babe, nor will the rest of us. Bulldog fans will never be able to forget the genial sports wizard who has so consistently guided Nampa teams to district, regional, and state champions. He has been bead football and basketball coach of Nampa High School for nine years. During that period Nampa won three Big Six football championships and tied for three others for a total of six champion of co-championship teams. In basketball Babe coached eight district champion ball clubs three Big Six winners and one state winner. Nampa entered the State basketball tournaments in eight out of the nine years.
In leaving his post in Nampa High, Brown commented, "I believe it's an advancement otherwise I wouldn't do it."
"I'm leaving a grand bunch of people behind but I can't say I'm sorry to leave. Like the little kid who does something wrong and then says he's sorry, he isn't, or he couldn't have done it in the first place." Brown added: "I would like to express my appreciation to the people of Nampa, the merchants and business men, the parents, and the administration. I have received wonderful co-operation from all of them, but most of all I'd like to say I appreciate the kids, they're a grand bunch!" Well, Babe, all we can say is: "We like you too."

The Trail, College of Idaho yearbook

The TRAIL, on behalf of the student body and faculty, extends best wishes to J. A. "Babe" Brown, who retired this year as Athletic Director, Football Coach, and Baseball Coach. The "Babe" has completed 38 years of coaching, and teaching in Idaho public schools and colleges. His career included positions at Burley, Lewiston, Moscow and Nampa high schools, as well as at the University of Idaho and The College of Idaho. His overall record includes 533 basketball victories, 158 in football, and 128 in baseball. His teams have won numerous district, state, and conference championships, while his former players and pupils have established themselves as leaders in their communities.

"Babe" Brown has been a credit to the coaching profession. His teams have reflected the high ideals he stood for, and we are better for having been associated with him. The lack of his presence on campus, due to his well-earned retirement, will be felt by all.
