June I. Beebe (nee DeVries), 91, of West Sayville, died recently. When she was two years of age, June DeVries met five-year-old John Beebe of West Sayville. In 1930, they married, a marriage that lasted until Mr. Beebe's death in February of this year. June graduated in 1927 from Montclair University and, at age 19, began teaching school. Later, as a working mother of two children, she earned a degree from Adelphi. She substituted in the Sayville School System and retired from the Oakdale Elementary School after teaching kindergarten for 18 years. She established a scholarship for deserving high school graduates who had been in her kindergarten class. Mrs. Beebe taught Bible class and Sunday school at the First Reformed Church of West Sayville. She was active in starting the West Sayville Beach Association, and she was a diligent canvasser for the American Red Cross and for what was known as the West Sayville/Sayville Ambulance Corp. She was active in the Sayville Historical Society. For many years, Mrs. Beebe was the Brownie Girl Scout Leader of the West Sayville Troop, and she served on the South Shore Girl Scout Council. She was the first president of the West Sayville Fire Department Ladies' Auxiliary.
