Donald Bruce Sterling, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, passed away quickly on May 12, 2013, after ten years of difficult health challenges.
He was born on June 18, 1938, in Denver, Colorado, and lived with his family in the barracks at the Buckley Field Airbase following WWII. His family moved to Salt Lake when he was 12, where he later graduated from Granite High School and the University of Utah. He married his high school sweetheart, Jarilyn Jaynes, in November 1959 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
He was deeply patriotic, serving in the US Army Reserves, and instilled a love of country in his children and grandchildren. He worked for most of his career in the insurance industry where he mentored countless brokers and agents. He also worked as a bondsman for Beehive Bail Bonds, showing compassion and understanding for everyone he met.
Don was civic-minded and volunteered on the health professional licensing boards for the State of Utah, Bountiful Boys Little League Baseball, and Woods Cross Youth Football for several years. He was a proud founding member of the Woods Cross High School Boosters. He enjoyed serving the youth and young adults through a variety of scouting and church callings over the years.
Don had a great sense of humor and a positive attitude until the very end. He always had a joke or a funny one-liner. He was a true conversationalist and loved to visit with family, friends, and anyone sitting next to him at a ballgame. He spoke often of his many youthful adventures and mischief. Don loved reading the newspaper and was always sure to clip and pass along articles he knew would interest you-he was always thinking of his family. He was an avid fisherman and loved going "up to the 'Berry."
Don is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Jarilyn, and his children, Stacey (Richard) Nordell, Trent (Jennifer) Sterling, Alison (Mitch) Campbell, and Aimee (Fred Moesinger) Sterling. His grandchildren Nathan, Matthew, Olivia, Alexis, Elizabeth, Zachary and Emily will miss him on the sidelines and in the audience cheering them on. He is also survived by his sister Sue (Ed) Sparling, in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his grandson Nicolas Sterling, his brother Doug Sterling, and his parents, Fred and May Sterling.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 18, 2013, at the North Canyon Stake Center, 965 East Oakwood Drive in Bountiful at 4:00 pm. Friends and family may call from 2:00 - 3:45 pm prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Lake View Memorial Cemetery at 1640 Lakeview Drive in Bountiful.
