Funeral Services Held Wednesday For Mrs. N.T. Wells
Wife of the County's Only Remaining Civil War Veteran
Mrs. N.T. Wells, 91, a long time resident of Cherokee county, died at her home in Marcus on Monday afternoon at 5:30, following an illness of two weeks.
Funeral services were held Wednesday in the Methodist church, the Rev. Fremont Faul officiating. A quartet composed of L.M. Miller, Stanley Addy, Fred Mossman and Ivan Addy, sang three numbers, "Safe in the Arms of Jesus", "No Night There", and "My Jesus I Have Thee".
Pallbearers were the four sons; one grandson, Dean Wells, of Sioux City, and a nephew, Ralph Warner, of Worthington, Minn.
Brink was in charge of the funeral arrangements, and interment was in Marcus cemetery.
Jane Parker was born in Bellefontaine, Ohio, February 19, 1851, and passed away at her home in Marcus, Iowa, Monday evening, March 30, 1942. She had reached the very advanced age of 91 years on the 19th of February.
While a young girl, she moved with her parents to Wisconsin. There on October 25, 1871, at Lancaster, she was united in marriage to N.T. Wells. Last October, the couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
In 1877, the family moved to Pottawatomie county, Iowa, where they lived for six years. They then moved to Cherokee county in 1883, living on a farm in Tilden township, about 11 miles southwest of Marcus. Mr. and Mrs. Wells have made their home in Marcus since 1911.
There are five children from this home. The four sons are Earnest and Ben of Sioux City; Vilas of Pierson, and Chester of Sibley. The daughter, Edith, preceded her mother in death, in 1927.
Besides her sons, and her husband, who is the only living Civil War veteran in Cherokee county, she leaves to mourn five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. One grandson, Leland Wells, died January 9 of this year. Also her circle of neighbors and friends has increased throughout the years; they join the family in this hour of loss.
Mrs. Wells united with the Presbyterian church upon moving to Marcus. She has always maintained an active interest in her church, both at home and around the world. Her interest was especially centered in her Bible. In years past, she had been active in Eastern Star circles.
We remember her for her thoughtfulness of others, and her forgetfulness of herself, even during her last illness. She was never one to complain. Someone said, " If mansions in glory are made from materials sent on before, she has a beautiful on awaiting her." Or, "If good deeds are jewels for a crown, her crown will have many jewels adorning it."
