Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, then served in the United States Army from 1838 to 1855 and from 1858 to 1861. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War he resigned his Army commission to serve with the Confederacy, and was commissioned as a Brigadier General. During the war he led a brigade in the Vicksburg, Chattanooga, and Atlanta Campaigns. In the post war, he went to Egypt and joined the army of the Khedive where he was promised an appointment as a Brigadier General, which was never implemented. He served as a Colonel, participated in the Abyssin War, resided in Cairo and died at Alexandria where he was buried. A memorial to him was erected at Lewisburg, West Virginia, and in the churchyard of Saint James the Less Episcopal Churchyard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where his wife is buried.
