Josiah Richard "Joe" Donelson was born on April 30, 1886 in Nashville, Tennessee, the son of James William Donelson (1857–1937) and Elizabeth Jane (Hurt) Donelson (1857–1912).
He was married 1st on December 29, 1906 in Nashville, Tennessee to Paris Brewer (1889–15 Mar 1914), and he was married 2nd on April 3, 1914 in Nashville to Mary Melissa "Maddie" Greer (1894–1999).
In Nashville he worked as a switchman in railroad terminals for 15 years. Shortly after he was married to his 2nd wife in 1914, they moved to Detroit, Michigan and only recently returned to Nashville. Living at 1421 8th Avenue South in Nashville, Joe was 44 years old and married when he died on February 9, 1931 in Nashville.
Survivors included his 2nd wife Mary, daughters Mrs Uriah Bolton, Mrs Andrew McWhirter, Josephine Donelson, Audrey Donelson and Susie Mai Donelson, son James Donelson, father J W Donelson and brother J W Donelson Jr.
Funeral Services were held on February 12th at the Donelson home, and burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville.
