Obituary Claude Lee Young
Claude Lee Young was born March 13, 1892 in Hebron. He was the son of Asa and Corilla Young. In his youth he was baptized in the Presbyterian Church in Hebron which was the church his grandfather, Byron F. Young helped establish. He was a graduate he took a course in electrical engineering in Sioux City, Iowa. He was married to Viola A. Powers November 7, 1913. They made their home at this time in Sioux City. To this union was born a daughter, Katherine Evelyn, on August 23, 1915.
In 1920 the family returned to Hebron where Claude continued his electrical career, consisting of the electrical wiring of the small communities and farm homes surrounding Hebron in Thayer County.
In 1924, he accepted employment as head electrician with the Therial Duffield Fireworks Co. of Roby, Indiana. He spent one season with this company, on tours of all large cities in the east, assembling huge fireworks displays for entertainment. At the of this season he joined the Chicago Police Force, giving up his electrical career to enter law enforcement. After completing his training with the Chicago Police Force he entered the New Lawrence Hotel in Chicago as house detective, where he remained four years.
In 1929 he returned to Hebron and was appointed Chief of Police, holding this position for 21 years.
In 1950 he resigned from the Hebron City Police Force to accept an appointment as Deputy Sheriff of Thayer County, where he remained for 12 years, until his retirement in 1962.
He departed this life in the Thayer County Memorial Hospital Feb. 13, 1964 at the age of 71 years and 11 months.
Claude gained many friends and much respect from people in all walks of life, especially in his police work. He will always be remembered for his willingness to help those who had strayed or were in need of help or moral support.
His mother, Corilla E. Young preceded him in death Nov. 27, 1963.
He is survived by his wife, Viola; his daughter, Kay; son-in-law, Lyle; grandson, Duane Lee Hubbard of of Kearney; twin brother, Carl C. of Kalamazoo, Mich.; a nephew, Bob Young of South Bend, Ind.; a niece, Betty of Newark, Ohio, and seven great-nieces and nephews.
