Lorraine (Fox Lowe) Ballance, 88, Ventura, CA, died Thanksgiving morning, November 25, 2010, at her home.

She was born April 12, 1922, at home in Bethel, MO, the daughter of William H. and Bessie Gochenour Fox.

Survivors include three children, Christopher (Patsy) Lowe, Columbia, Karen (Gordon) Hendricker, Shelbyville and Ventura, CA, and Kurtis Ballance, Boise, ID.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband.

She married Lieutenant Chester F. Lowe in Washington, D.C. in 1939 and to that union, one son, Christopher, was born. Lt. Lowe was killed following the end of the war, so Mrs. Lowe and Christopher moved to New Orleans and Sunflower, KS, where she attended the University of Kansas (Lawrence) for two years.

In 1948, she married Richard L. Ballance in Shelbyville and to that union two children, Karen, and Kurtis Lee Ballance, were born. Mr. and Mrs. Ballance lived in Missouri until the mid-50's at which time, the lure of jobs pulled the family to Southern California.

Mrs. Ballance graduated from Tech High School in Washington, D.C. and attended Ventura Junior College, and graduated from San Fernando Valley State College in 1964, beginning her teaching career that fall. She taught third grade at Saticoy School, where she enjoyed her career and made many life-long friends.

She retired in 1982, and enjoyed a lot of traveling. Frequent visits to Shelby County, were a highlight, where she enjoyed many Bridge parties, BBQ's, and the close friendships of small-town Missouri. In 1985 and 1988, Mrs. Ballance and daughter, Karen, traveled to Europe.

In later years, she enjoyed playing Bridge, attending retired-teachers functions, dining out, going to Las Vegas with family, and watching Quiz Shows on TV. Several stints of rehab in nursing homes made her more convinced that she wanted to reside in her own home as long as possible. The greatest effort was expended to give her that wish.

At her request there will be no funeral services, but her children will remember her when her ashes are placed at Zion Cemetery, near Bethel, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Friends of the Ventura Library, Ventura, CA or The Ventura County Chapter of Mended Hearts (Community Memorial Hospital, Ventura, CA).
