With the passing of Abel N. Espinosa, Monterey has lost one of its most cherished links with the colorful days of the Old West. Mr. Espinosa died last night at his home, 1150 Fifth street, at the age of 96. He had been in failing health for some time.
His memories of historic and exciting happenings in this area reached back farther than any other's in recent years, and were, augmented oy the tales passed on by his pioneer parents. Mr. Espinosa was an important witness in the beatification trial of Father Junipero Serra held at Carmel Mission offering perhaps the most vital testimony heard.
During the latter quarter century of his life Mr. Espinosa was best known for his golfing prowess. Still able to shoot a hole in one at the age of 80, he passed on his knowledge and skill to all of his five sons, producing one of this country most celebrated golfing families.
Abel Espinosa was born Dec. 6, 1855 on his parents Pilarcitos Rancho on the Salinas river, one of five sons of Peter and Guadalupe Espinosa direct descendants of the Spanish followers who made the march through California with Junipero Serra.

The Espinosa family which also included four daughters, moved to Monterey when Abel was still an infant. He grew up here and attended school in the Old Cuartel, located on Munras Avenue in what was later known as the Boronda Adobe before it was removed to make room for a Standard service station.
Mr. Espinosa’s marriage to Placida Paula Martines was solemnized in the old San Carlos Church with Father Casanova officiating at the mass.
Mr. Espinosa was a jack of all trades, he was a well-known hunter, scout in his early years later engaging in the lumber industry, and in the plumbing and heating business. It was he who caulked the first pipeline from the reservoir to the old Del Monte Hotel while working for the Pacific Improvement Co.
In 1914 he attended the University of California taking courses in landscape gardening. Following this he designed several fine gardens in Claremont and Piedmont as on the Monterey Peninsula, becoming widely
known in this field
