Hurley C. Lowder, pastor of Arlington Street Church in Rocky Mount for 30 years before his retirement more than a year ago, died in a quiet manner that was in keeping with his life. He died in Rocky Mount after a brief illness. Upon his retirement, he said, "My main objective had been to quietly serve the people." He added that he had always considered the church a place of peace, fellowship and love." Throughout his long ministry in Rocky Mount, he stressed this theme of harmony and the Arlington Church had a quiet, steady, harmonious growth under his leadership. He was particularly active in visitation of the sick. A native of Albermarle, he did his high school work at Wingate, received his A.B. degree from Wake Forest and master of theology degree from Southern Baptist Seminary at Louisville, Kentucky.
