Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Born in Salisbury, North Carolina, at the start of the Civil War he was a planter when he enlisted the Confederate Yell Rifles as a Private. Appointed Colonel of the 15th Arkansas Infantry Regiment following the Battle of Shiloh, he was promoted Brigadier General on December 13, 1862. He led his corps in fighting at Stones River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga and in the Atlanta Campaign. In June 1864, he was severely wounded at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain and was forced to retire from the Army. After the war, he served as a member of the Tennessee State Senate.
