Robert Renaldo Sterna, 81, a resident of Amherst, passed away Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at his residence. Robert was born June 20, 1931 in Amherst where he was raised and was a lifetime resident, graduating from Amherst High School.
Robert worked for the United States Postal Service for many years as a mail carrier. Prior to working for the Postal Service, he worked for five years at the Lorain Shipyards. He was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ in Amherst. Robert was a member of Alcoholic Anonymous for over 30 years. He loved nature, was an avid bird watcher and vegetable farmer. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Robert loved traveling and dancing with his wife. He enjoyed watching all sports and one of his greatest joys was being a grandfather.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Mary Ann Sterna (nee Marozsan); daughters, Laura Lombardo and her husband, Guy of Elyria, Shelly Hill and husband, Thomas of Vermilion; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; brother, Donald and his wife, Kay Sterna of Amherst; sisters, Virginia Vacsi of Amherst, Shirley and her husband, Ray Sterk of Brownhelm, Maxine Mann of Amherst and Sharon and her husband, Gary Thompson of North Ridgeville.
Robert was preceded in death by his infant brother, John Sterna in 1932; and parents, John and Eleanor Sterna (nee Burke).
Friends may call Sunday, April 28, 2013, from 4 until 8 P.M., at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 29, 2013, at 11 A.M., at the funeral home. The Reverend Mark Pemberton, Pastor of St. Peter United Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will follow at Brownhelm Cemetery, Brownhelm Township.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Peters United Church of Christ, 582 Church St., Amherst, OH 44001; Alzheimer's Association, Cleveland Area Chapter, P.O. Box 74924, Cleveland, OH 44194; New Life Hospice, 3500 Kolbe Rd., Lorain, OH 44053.
