He enlisted in Company "A", 6th Battalion ("Tredegar" or "Ordnance" Battalion), Richmond Local Defense Troops on 16 October 1863. That unit was consolidated with the 2nd Battalion, RLDT in October 1864 to form the 2nd Regiment, RLDT.

After the War he worked as a locomotive machinist. He never married. His grave in his grandmother Ann D. Richardson's plot, near his parents, is unmarked.
