James Ayers married Rebecca Margaret Long on April 14, 1851 in Hendricks County, Indiana. The 1860 Census shows James (age 30) and Rebecca (age 25) living in Danville with children Mary E. (age 6), William (age 3) and Marshal (age 2). The 1870 Census shows James (age 39) and Rebecca M. (age 35) living in Center Township with children Naoma (age 18), William Z. (age 13), Sarah M. (age 11), Willie (age 8), twins Eugene and Carey (age 4) and Clauda (age 2). The 1880 Census shows James (age 50) as a brick mason with wife Rebecca M. (age 47) and children Cora and Eugene (age 14), Viola (age 11) and William (age 23).

Eugene Oliver Ayers and his twin sister, Cora, were born on February 21, 1866, near Danville. Their parents were James and Margaret (Long) Ayers. Other children in the family were Naomi Elizabeth (Duncan), Ella (Magee), Marcella (Van Note), Claudia (Sheets) and William.

James Ayers, for many years a well known citizen of Danville, but who has lived near Maplewood for some years, died Thursday of erysipelas, in his sixty-fourth year.
